1. General Principles

   There should be a number before each entry (NO! This applies to other styles like the British Standard, Vancouver Style and IEEE Style.)

   The reference list will list the sources in alphabetical order. (CORRECT)

   The entire reference list should be double line spaced.(CORECT: In fact, this applies to the entire academic essay.)

   If you have cited more than one source from the same author which were published in the same year, the one you cited first should come first in the reference list. (No! When you are citing two pieces (or more) of works from the same author published in the same year, you should list them alphabetically according to the TITLE of the source. You need to put an alphabet after the publication year to alert the readers too.)

2. Reference list entry

   Except for the first line, all other lines of the same source should be indented one-half inch from the left margin.(CORRECT)

   If you have included your sources in footnotes, you do not need a reference list.(NO! The use of footnote is irrelevant to crediting a source! After you have cited the source within text, you will need to prepare an entry for that source.)

   Normally, each entry starts with the first name of an author.(NO! Normally, each entry starts with the LAST name of an author.)

   There is normally a full stop at the end of each part of the reference.(Correct)

   When referencing internet sources, it is sufficient just to copy and paste the full web link.(No! Copying the link is not the way we cite a source in a reference list!)

   (There is no clear link between the thesis statement and the TS).


3. Words of each reference list entry

   ALL letters of the name component (including all the letters of the last name) should be capitalized. (NO! For the name of the author/editor, only the first letter of the last name and the initials of other names have to be capitalized too.)

   All first letters of each word should be capitalized. (No! Only the first letter of the first word in each component (i.e. title of the article / title of the book) needs to be capitalized. If there is a colon, the first letter after the colon has to be capitalized too!)

   The symbol “&” can be replaced by the word “and”.(CORRECT)

   For hand written work, you can underline the words that you would italicize.(CORRECT)

   (This sentence is too general and it is hard for the reader to make the connection between the TS and topic sentence.
